It’s a well-known fact that I’m a TV junkie. During high season (aka fall and winter), I can watch up to 12 TV shows a week! So trust me when I say I know my stuff. Who do you think my friends and family turn to when they need a show to binge? ME.
I wrote a Netflix recommendation post before, as well as a few TV-related blog posts, and since it’s been a while since I’ve last written one, I thought now would be the perfect time to write another edition! With fall on its way, you’re more than likely to want to snuggle up and watch something on Netflix. So I gathered up my favorite movies and TV shows of the moment so you have plenty to choose from!
I don’t know why, but I haven’t been able to watch that many TV shows in the last few months. Maybe it’s my extra busy schedule, but I just haven’t been able to sit down and watch Netflix that many times. Still, I stumbled upon a couple of awesome series that I would definitely recommend!
I was reluctant to watch this one at first. Shadowhunters is the TV adaptation of the popular YA book series The Mortal Instruments, and since the movie adaptation had been a flop, I didn’t want the producers to do any more damage to this series.
*Before you watch the TV show, I suggest you read at least the first installment (City of Bones)! It’ll help you understand everything a lot better.
At first, the acting seems cringe-worthy, but the more you watch it, the better it becomes. The two main characters (Clary and Jace) are probably the ones that made me roll my eyes the most. I cannot take any of the two actors seriously and their acting made me laugh when it was supposed to be dramatic. But other characters make up for it and make you want to carry on watching.
Don’t let my comment about the acting scare you away! The story is actually addicting. I felt a bit rubbed in a wrong way at first because it doesn’t follow the book storyline to perfection, but I like the additions that were made. You don’t have to have read the books to understand what’s going on (even if I do recommend to read them first!). The plot is overly dramatic in a funny way. It’s cringe-worthy in the best way possible. It’s full of plot twists that will leave you gasping and will make you hit the “next episode” button.
I stumbled upon this show totally by accident. I was feeling like watching something on a Sunday night, saw that I had added this show to my list (which is like 10 feet long) and decided to go for it. I watched the pilot, thought it was good and I carried on.
A week later, here I was, already on episode 7! I wasn’t expecting to become that obsessed with it.
If you love dramas with a comedy twist, law and hot people (seriously, THIS CAST), this show is perfect for you! It’s intense, it’ll have you on the edge of your seat. But there’s also this portion of comic relief that will make you unwind and get lost in the world of kickass New York lawyers.
You will fall in love with the two main characters, Mike and Harvey. Honestly, these two make an AMAZING pair. The other characters are just as awesome and each one of them brings a different dynamic to the show.
I’m only on season 3 so far, but I’m addicted! My mom and my sister also started watching it, and they both LOVE it! My sister loved it so much that she’s already all caught up with the six seasons and she’s ready for the new episodes!
Surely by now you know that I’m a Marvel fan. So I think I was bound to mention one of its Netflix shows at some point on my blog. I didn’t know who Daredevil was or what he did before I started watching, but as a fellow Marvel nerd, I knew this was bound to be good.
And, of course, I wasn’t wrong. Honestly, I’m kind of hoping that Matthew Murdock will join the MCU at some point. Wouldn’t that be awesome? He could kick ass alongside the Avengers.
What I love about this show is that it takes you both behind the scenes of law, but it also follows around a superhero/vigilante. Matthew Murdock (aka Daredevil) is both. And God does he do it well. He gets his ass kicked just as much as he kicks other people’s ass, but he’s stubborn and dedicated to his cause. I really liked him as a main character, and I think it had a lot to with Charlie Cox’s interpretation.
If you haven’t watched The Office yet, don’t wait a minute longer. I started watching it back in August because one of my colleagues urged me to do it, and boy, I became obsessed with it. The first episode didn’t really convince me, but the more episodes I watched, the more I loved it. After having finished the first season, I could officially call myself a fan. I don’t know why I waited so long to watch it, but I definitely do not regret it!
If you have watched Parks and recreation, the style is similar. Basically, we’re following around people working at Dundler-Mifflin in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It’s filmed documentary-style, so you get to know what the characters think and their commentary on what’s going on in the office.
I’ve only just finished season six, but I can already tell that this show is going to be one of my all-time favorites.
I’ve never really mentioned movies in any of my posts before (and that probably has to do with the fact that I don’t watch that many movies), but I did watch a few on Netflix and discovered new favorites.
This movie was a nice surprise. I wasn’t expecting it as much as I did. Roughly, it’s about a popular chef who gets a bad review written by a food blogger and sees his career plummeting because of it. That is… until he decides to run a food truck. I loved the story line and I think Jon Favreau depicted the main character perfectly. The characters are charming, the development of Carl’s relationship with his son is heartwarming and the cast is simply amazing (and we even get a glimpse at Scarlett Johansson and RDJ! Iron Man 2 reunion, anyone?). You’ll end up wanting very hungry and will want to try some of Carl’s delicious food!
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
There are only two reasons why I wanted to watch this movie: Tina Fey and Martin Freeman. That’s it. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did! This is not your regular Tina Fey movie. This one has substance and discusses real issues. As a communications major who might want to become a journalist, I found this movie to be really interesting. I never really understood what the life of a correspondent might be like, and this movie describes it quite well.
The only thing I didn’t like was the ending, but that’s because I’m not a big fan of opened endings. I like to know how things end and this one leaves us with an open door. Still, I definitely recommend it!
I had big expectations for this movie. I’m a fan of Melissa McCarthy and I had heard a lot of great things about that movie. I had been waiting for it to be on Netflix ever since it was released on the big screen, so when I saw that it was, I jumped on it. Let me tell you that it didn’t disappoint. If you like action movies and comedies, this one is the perfect mix for you! McCarthy’s character is a kickass even if she’s still new to this. She makes mistakes, but she definitely knows how to fight! The cast is fantastic and the storyline is intriguing and will have hooked to your screen. If you’re looking for a nice way to wind down after a long day (or week), this is the perfect movie! I still laugh every time I watch it.
Sleeping with Other People
I honestly don’t even know why I decided to watch this movie. I just remember that I saw Jason Sudekis’s name in the cast list, and thought “Why not?”. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. The story is cliché, yes. But I think it’s extremely cute and romantic all the same. If you’re into the friends-turn-into-lovers storyline, then you’ll enjoy this movie. It’s light, it’s funny and it’s the perfect movie to unwind and relax during midterms!
