20 Movies to Watch on Galentine’s Day

I have created the perfect list of movies to watch on Galentine's day with your friends! Click through to find out which made the list!

As you know, Galentine’s day is coming. It’s time to celebrate friendship and remind yourself why women totally rock! I think it’s important not to lose sight of how powerful women are and that we don’t need men to get things done.  Galentine’s day is also a great opportunity to tell your girlfriends how much you appreciate them and how much they mean to you. I gathered the perfect list of movies starring kick-ass and powerful women to watch with your BFFs on Galentine’s day. So grab some popcorn and get ready for a marathon!

  1. The HeatThe Heat stars two of my favorite actresses, who also happen to be two big names in Hollywood! Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock offer an hilarious dynamic duo. A federal agent and a bad-mouthed cop are forced to work together on a case to take down a drug lord. It’s as funny as you would expect it to be, and those two women are bad asses!
  2. Miss Congeniality. If you’ve never watched Miss Congeniality before, drop everything and go watch it RIGHT NOW. An FBI agent must go undercover in the Miss United States beauty pageant to prevent a group from bombing the event. Sandra Bullock is amazing as Gracie Hart, and the girl seriously kicks ass!
  3. Spy. Okay, I know what you’re thinking. “Really, Amelie? Are you going to put every single movie Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock have ever starred in?!” The answer is no (even though I probably should! These two women are amazing, pointblankperiod.) In Spy, Melissa McCarthy is a desk-bound CIA analyst who volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer and prevent diabolical global disaster. Melissa McCarthy is both super bad ass and hilarious! Probably one of my favorite movies of hers.
  4. Pitch Perfect. From the moment I’ve watched it, I fell in love with Pitch Perfect. It’s fun, unique, and celebrates the importance of friendship. It tells the story of Beca, a freshman at Barden University, who is forced into joining The Bellas, her school’s all-girls singing group. Injecting some much-needed energy into their repertoire, The Bellas take on their male rivals in a campus competition. You’ll sing along to every song, I can already tell you!
  5. Sex and the CitySex and the City is an entity. We’ve all heard about the famous quartet formed by the fashionable Carrie Bradshaw, the strong headed Miranda Hobbes, the preppy Charlotte Yorke, and the sex-crazed Samantha Jones. This movie picks up a few years after the show’s season finale. And this time, it features a wedding! SATC celebrates women and puts friendship before anything else. Prepare your Cosmos and have fun getting back into this world!
  6. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. The book series that this movie is inspired from is one of my favorites. I grew up with it and it resonates with me on such a deep level! The movie is no different. It’s the epitome of friendship, and you’ll recognize yourself in a little bit of all four girls.
  7. The HelpThe Help is one of my all-time favorite books (read more about that in this post!). And the movie is no different! The cast stars big names in Hollywood such as Viola Davis, Emma Stone, and Octavia Spencer, to only name a few. It’s a story that challenges social conventions of its world, aka 1962 Mississippi, like no other. It’s a must watch!
  8. Mean Girls. Do I really need to say more? I think it’s safe to say that everyone has watched Mean Girls, or knows about it. (If not, where have you been for the past 10 years? Living in a cave? WATCH IT NOW.) I think this movie is the perfect example of how powerful women can be (and why you should fear them for it).
  9. Bridesmaids. Competition between the maid of honor and a bridesmaid, over who is the bride’s best friend, threatens to upend the life of an out-of-work pastry chef. Bridesmaids is all about friendship, and how ugly it can get sometimes. But the ending will make you understand that what builds a friendship is both the good AND the bad. And bonus: it features some of the best women in comedy!
  10. Bring it On. Just as with Mean Girls, do I really need to explain myself with this one? A champion high school cheerleading squad discovers its previous captain stole all their best routines from an inner-city school and must scramble to compete at this year’s championships.
  11. Clueless. Would you believe if I told you that I watched Clueless only recently? Well, I can’t believe that I hadn’t watched this movie sooner! A rich high school student tries to boost a new pupil’s popularity but reckons without affairs of the heart getting in the way. It’s a fun movie to watch with your girlfriends! And I so wish Cher was one of my friends!
  12. John Tucker Must Die. Three ex-girlfriends of a serial cheater set up their former lover to fall for the new girl in town so they can watch him get his heart broken. The movie is funny and stars an amazing cast! It’s one of my sister’s favorites (and mine!) for a reason.
  13. Legally Blonde. This movie is one of the most female-empowering movies I’ve ever watched. When a blonde sorority queen is dumped by her boyfriend, she decides to follow him to law school to get him back and, once there, learns she has more legal savvy than she ever imagined. Elle Woods is the proof that once you put your mind to something, you can conquer the world (and still do it in style!).
  14. Monte Carlo. Three young women vacationing in Paris find themselves whisked away to Monte Carlo after one of the girls is mistaken for a British heiress. This story is about friendship and coming at terms with who you are. The cast of this movie is simply A-MA-ZING. I mean, Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy, and Cory Monteith in one movie? Sign me in!
  15. Mona Lisa Smile. I stumbled upon this movie purely by accident, and it instantly became one of my favorites. A free-thinking art professor teaches conservative 1950s Wellesley girls to question their traditional social roles. Starring the talented Julia Roberts as the main character, the story is enticing. And the rest of the cast is just as talented! It’s a must watch.
  16. Bride Wars. Two best friends become rivals when they schedule their respective weddings on the same day. Bride Wars is the kind of movie that is both hilarious and dramatic. It reminds you that, in the end, there’s nothing more important than having your friends by your side. Starring the both beautiful and talented, Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway, this movie will make you laugh!
  17. Aquamarine. Aquamarine is the epitome of friendship. Two teenage girls discover a mermaid in their beach club’s swimming pool. While it might look like a romance movie at first sight, the second, more important message is that friends are everything.
  18. Mulan. Okay, is there a more kick-ass female Disney character than Mulan? (and don’t feed me that crap about Frozen being the first Disney movie where romance is not the center point) To save her father from death in the army, a young maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China’s greatest heroines in the process. Now, talk about bad ass!
  19. Sydney White. A modern retelling of Snow White set against students in their freshman year of college in the Greek system. While Sydney White is your typical teenage romance movie, the main character is totally badass! Sydney does not only find her path, she totally revolutionizes her school!
  20. The Devil Wears Prada. This movie is the perfect example of powerful women. A smart but sensible new graduate lands a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly, the demanding editor-in-chief of a high fashion magazine. Both Miranda Priestly and Andy are complete bad asses and the best at what they do.
