A Day in the Life

I’ve been recently at loss with the type of content I wanted to write for the blog. As a college blogger, I always find summer to be the hardest time when it comes to creating content. I feel like we’re all so done with school and just don’t want to read anything that’s related to it. So I brought back this reader survey and asked around me in the hope that I would find ideas that resonate with me.

Surprisingly, a lot of you requested more personal posts, such as life updates and behind the scenes stuff. I have to admit that my life is not all that interesting, but I do know that I don’t open up often enough to my readers, and that’s something that I’ve been trying to change. A friend of mine suggested that I share a typical day in my life and I loved the idea! I think it can also serve as a life update since, as you may or may not know, I’ve been on an internship for the last 4 months (and still 3 months to go!). Being a marketing intern is basically the only interesting thing I’ve been doing lately. So here’s what a day in the life of a marketing intern is like!

5.30 am – My alarm goes off. I turn it off and fall back asleep.

5.50 am – I wake up (for real this time). I check my emails and Instagram account. I might check other social media platforms if I have the time.

6.10 am – I check my weather app so I can try to figure out what to wear for the day.

6.12 am – I get dressed

6.15 am – I wash my face (check my skincare routine here) and brush my teeth. I try to do something with my hair, but I get discouraged by the mess and just go with my usual half up-do.

6.30 am – I do a quick and simple makeup look, as I’ve already spent too much time doing everything else.

6.40 am – I pack my breakfast, snacks, and lunch for the day,

6.45 am – I make my bed. If I have extra time before I need to leave, I check the social media platforms I haven’t had time to catch up on.

6.52 am – I put my coats and rain boots on (which seems to be my go-to combo recently with all the rain we’ve been getting…).

6.55 am – I leave to take the bus.

7.05 am – My bus arrives. I usually open a book or listen to some music while I wait for my stop. For more ways to rock your commute, click here!

7.22 am – I get off my bus and go wait for my second bus that will take me directly to work.

7.29 am – I get on said bus. I’m there literally two minutes, so I don’t have time to read or anything. (It would take me about 20 minutes to get to work on foot, which is why I take the bus, in case you were wondering.)

7.34 am – I get to work. I turn my computer on and eat my breakfast while I read my emails. I also glance at my to-do list and try to determine what my priorities are for the day.

7.45 am – I get started on projects or continue things that I had already started the day before.

8.30 am to 12 pm – My day varies a lot on a day-to-day basis. My days are never the same, though there are tasks that I have to do pretty often. Here are a few examples:

  • Plan social media calendar and create visuals
  • Create different kinds of visuals via Canva (social media posts, PDF documents, memos, signage, etc.)
  • Update documents
  • Translate documents
  • Answer emails
  • Meetings
  • Event coordination

12 pm – Lunch time. I normally bring in my own lunch and eat at my desk while checking social media or working. Some days I go to the cafeteria and buy something to eat, but that doesn’t happen too often. However, every other Friday, my colleagues and I go to a restaurant and eat lunch there.

1 pm – I get back to work. I have more emails to answer, meetings to attend, and tasks to cross off my to-do list.

4.21 pm – I turn off my laptop and gather my things so I can go home. I have to make sure I leave by no later than 4:25, otherwise I’m going to miss my bus. Some days, if I have too much work to get done, I’ll stay until 4:50, but that’s pretty rare.

4.25 pm – I leave the building and walk towards my bus stop.

4.33 pm – I get to the bus stop. I normally have to wait because the bus is *always* late.

4.35 pm – I hop on the bus to get home.

4.45 pm – I get off the bus and walk home.

4.52 pm – I finally get inside my room. Some days I’ll change into something more comfortable, but most of the time I just turn on my laptop and crash onto my bed.

4.55 pm – I’m hungry so I grab a snack. I try to figure out what I’ll eat for dinner while I check my emails and social media.

5.30 pm – I get dinner. I don’t cook much, so I normally just have to heat something in the oven or in the microwave. I eat dinner in my room, in front of my computer.

5.50 – 8.30 pm – My nights are normally a mixture of blogging, Netflix, and reading. Some days I’ll work on the blog (whether it is content-wise or social media-wise), but most nights I’ll just binge something on Netflix. Lately I’ve also been trying to get more reading done, so I also make sure to get some time to do that.

8.30 pm – I get in the shower.

8.45 pm – I finish my skincare routine and brush my teeth.

9 pm – I head to bed and listen to some music or read. I try to avoid using my laptop or iPad when I’m in bed so I can fall asleep quickly.

10 pm – I call it a night and head to sleep.

One of the things that I’ve learned quickly at my job is that there is no “typical day”. Sure, there are some tasks that are recurrent and that I have to do pretty often, but no day is the same. That’s what I like about it!

If you would like to see more personal posts, please let me know! (or if there is any type of post you would like to see!) You can also fill out this survey if you want to.

  • I love this posts. It is so interesting to see what people get up to in a day. Your internship sounds pretty great!

    • It really is! We have an event at Le Château Frontenac in Quebec City next week and right now I’m neck-deep in work! It’s fun but really exhausting, haha.

Marketing is such a fun career, what I enjoy the most is that you’re never doing the same thing! Have so much fun learning and exploring in this time in your life.

    • I totally agree, Aly! That’s what I love most about it too. Thank you!

  • Wow… I have to say you are incredibly busy! Love how you laid your entire day out. I’m sure you learn a lot about how your time is spent when you see it like that. Nice job. 🙂

    • Haha, I am! Some days are busier than others, that’s for sure. And you’re right – I’ve learned a lot about time management since I’ve became an intern who works 40 hours a week!

  • You should do a post on how you got your internship! I’m trying to get a summer internship and a few tips would really help out.
