A Day in the Life of a Marketing Intern 2.0.

For the past month now, I have been working at a small Quebec-based company called Patience Fruit & Co as their marketing intern. This internship is my last one before I finally graduate, and it’s quite a bit different from my previous one with Uni-Select, a big car parts company on the Montreal South Shore. Patience is a small company offering dried organic cranberries, blueberries, artisan blends, and pure juices. The environment is quite different from my previous internship, and so are the tasks that I have to accomplish on a daily basis.

I know how much you guys liked my Day in the life of a marketing intern during my previous internship last year, so I thought I would show you a little glimpse into my life lately and what my current internship is like!

6.30 am – My alarm goes off. I grab my phone and do a quick browse of my email and social media accounts to see what I missed during the night (I focus on Twitter & Instagram as they are my favorites).

7.00 am – I get up and get dressed for the day, after checking my weather app to see what the weather outside is like.

7.15 am – I put my toasts or bagels in the toaster while continuing to check my social media apps.

7.20 am – I eat breakfast while reading some blogs on Bloglovin’ (click here to follow mine!).

7.25 am – I brush my teeth, wash my face and decide on what to do with my hair. Most days, I’ll just leave it natural and bring a hair tie or clip in my purse so I can tame it once I get to work. I also do a quick and simple makeup look because I’m running out of time (or I leave my face makeup-less, which has been the case more and more often lately).

7.35 am – I pack my lunch and snacks for the day.

7.40 am – I make my bed and pack my purse.

7.45 am – I put my coat, scarf, and boots on and get ready to leave.

7.48 am – I leave to take the bus. I lock the door and put on the alarm system.

7.59 am – The bus arrives.

8.03 am – I get off my first bus at the bus station. I start walking towards the building where I work.

8.30 am – I arrive at work. I take off my boots and coat, put my lunch bag in the fridge so it’ll stay cold and turn on my computer.

8.35 am – I read my emails and open Skype and Microsoft Teams. My inbox hasn’t really been flooding since I’ve started to work there, but I still make sure that there’s nothing new that needs my attention right away.

8.40 am – I get on Instagram. As my main job is to manage the brand’s Instagram community, I spend a few hours of my day on this very task. If you want to check out what I’m doing, make sure to follow us! We are still pretty small, but I hope we can get to the next thousand before my internship ends. I personally think our account is pretty neat, if I do say so myself. 😉 In the morning, I’ll check out our notifications, reply to comments and DM if needed, go through our feed, engage on pictures and fill out my Excel spreadsheet detailing our number of followers and engagement.

9.30 am – I glance at my to-do list and determine what my priorities are for the day. I have quite a few tasks and projects going on, and my day changes a lot on a day-to-day basis. I mostly take care of the brand’s Web presence, so most of my tasks revolve around that. Here are a few examples of tasks that I am working on:

  • Plan our content for Instagram (posts and Instastories) and Facebook
  • Manage the social media/Web editorial calendar
  • Engage with users on Instagram
  • Write and revise posts for social media and our website
  • Watch over our competitors on the Web to see what they are doing
  • Edit and create documents using Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop

12.15 pm – It’s lunchtime. I bring my own lunch to work and eat in the kitchen with my colleagues. I only have 30 minutes to eat, so I don’t have time to go out and buy something.

12.45 pm – I get back to work. I open Instagram and check our notifications. When that’s done, I check out relevant hashtags and try to find similar ones to update our library. I try to engage with users who are using these hashtags. I keep track of everything in a spreadsheet.

1.30 pm – I get back to my miscellaneous tasks. My supervisor will likely have asked me to do complete some tasks regarding the social media and Web calendar, so I’ll take care of that first.

4.00 pm – I go back to Instagram one last time and engage with users in hashtags we’re using frequently. I follow some key influencers every once in a while.

5.00 pm – I turn off my laptop and gather my things so I can go home. I walk to the bus station again, so I’m in for a long walk.

5.30 pm – I arrive at the bus station and wait for my bus.

5.36 pm – I hop on the bus to get home.

5.45 pm – I get off the bus and walk home.

5.50 pm – I get inside my room. Some days I’ll throw my hair into a bun and change into something more comfortable, but most of the time I just empty my lunch bag and start making dinner.

6.15 pm – I eat dinner while catching up on social media and blogging. I’m no cook, so I normally just heat something up in the oven or in the microwave.

6.40 pm – I wash my dishes.

6.45 pm – I turn on my laptop. I’ll normally work on the blog, whether that is answering emails, replying to comments, creating content, brainstorming ideas or editing pictures. Some nights I’ll also post a new picture on Instagram and engage with the community a little (though after spending my day doing that at work, I’m not feeling much like doing Instagram, to be honest).

8.00 pm – I turn on Netflix and watch another episode of The Blacklist, the show I’m currently bingeing.

8.45 pm – I hop into the shower, do my skincare routine, and brush my teeth.

9.15 pm – I head to bed and read a few chapters of the book I’m currently reading. Before I call it a night, I’ll also review my monthly and quarterly goals and write down my best memory from the day in my notebook (I’m doing this thing where I’m writing down one memory every day in my notebook so I can remember my year better).

10 pm – I turn off the lights and go to sleep.

Despite my recurrent tasks, none of my days are exactly the same. Sure, I am at work from 8.30 to 5 and work on the blog most nights from 6 to 9, but there are days where I just crash onto my bed in front of Netflix or where I do tasks that are completely different from what I normally do at work. My days are pretty similar, but they are also a bit different. The life of a marketing intern is quite interesting!
